Since a train of modern narrow gauge cars would be modestly heavy, especially considering the head end traffic that will be carried, the Northland’s current ten wheelers were considered too light for such a train. The Newfoundland RR had, the year previously, taken delivery of handsome Baldwin built Pacifics. These narrow gauge locos had 50 inch drivers for speed and produced 20,000 lbs of tractive effort. A slight expansion to the cylinders would give 22,000 lbs and this would be a perfect combination for the modestly heavy train and a demanding but not impossible schedule.
