The second era, running to about 1890, featured longer cars (up to about 50-55 feet) with wood sheathed sides, clerestory roofs and open platforms, and the beginnings of sleeper, parlor car and other first class services. Most railroads specified their own plans to a host of local small builders (such as Jackson and Sharpe) while at the same time a few larger builders (such as Pullman) were beginning to emerge.
