Car Types

By the 1890s, the various types of service had been developed and the floor plans to support the services had been created. Other than the dome car which would not be introduced for another 50 years (and even here the hayrack observation car set a precedent), all the forms of cars were in service during the glory years of the all wooden car.  Roughly speaking, these cars could be divided into the following categories: head end, coaches, parlor cars, dining cars, sleepers, and observation cars.  Although not generally available to most
travelers, business cars or
private cars were often in the consists of passenger trains to accommodate the whims of the wealthy or the business dealings of railroad executives
